Glad it worked for your dad and I can definitely see it working for others. Part of the difficulty with being told that I need to make life style changes is how open ended it can be. It can make it hard to plan or know what to do or stick with it. I can definitely see it makes the on ramp to life style changes so much easier if you're given a plan and have to think little about it. This helped me. My doctor recommended a diet and gave me sites with meal plans so while I was trying to navigate my way through it, I had resources to get me going the first few weeks.
- lazide 3y agoAwesome stories! A key element in them (IMO) is in both of them the end result was recognized to be in the hands of the person doing it (not the Dr.), and they put the work in to accomplish it because they believed it was important for them. And that work was tractable. For many people, the hard part is getting to the point they (mentally) are able to do that, which is the psychiatric and environmental elements IMO. If someone has been convinced that they can't actually solve the problem, or that it is dangerous to solve the problem, they will avoid trying, or sabotage themselves when it looks like they could potentially succeed. If someone is in an environment where it is impossible to get proper nutrition, or get time/space to try things or do the planning required, or where they aren't allowed to make the decisions necessary for a better outcome, then they'll also be frustrated and unable to make the change. Luckily, both are addressable except in very rare edge cases, but it is rarely comfortable or easy to do.
