France's Ban on Short-Haul Flights Will Kill People
- ericmay 3y ago> You're 2,200 times more likely to die when traveling by car as opposed to by airplane. Take the train. Also a good argument to further reduce dependence on car-only infrastructure in the United States too. Naturally Reason.com (and others) is incapable of making the connection. Not only does this apply for cross-country travel, but also for daily needs like going to a coffee shop, grocery store, etc.
- theandrewbailey 3y ago> One undesirable effect is a longer time spent traveling. Because people's time is valuable and could otherwise be spent working, studying or with family and friends, the cost of traveling what the French government considers to be short distances will rise. I guess we aren't accounting for how long it takes to wait for a plane vs. a train, or the fact that it's easier to do other things on a train.
- lisasays 3y agoA recent study out of Harvard University found that, for people traveling within the United States, Europe, and Australia, the chances of being killed while flying are 1 in 11 million, while the chances of being killed while driving are 1 in 5,000. A stupid, intellectually dishonest article. The alternative to short-haul flights (in the vast majority of cases) is not driving, but train or bus travel.
