There's a part in 1984, when O'Brien is talking to Winston explaining how the more society falls in line, the harsher the rules become (when one would expect they'd be less necessary). The reason for this is "playing to the base" imo, it's not about trying to stop people smoking, it's to show anti-smoking zealots how "tough on smoking" the government is.
- chiefalchemist 3y agoGovernments allow an addictive carcinogen to be marketed, tax it, and then pat themselves on the back for being "tough on smoking" and the masses fall for the ruse. Yes, that's Orwellian alright.
