Nvidia's AI Focus Is Bad for Gamers
- ftxbro 3y agofirst gpu mining now gpu ai training the gamers will never get to use the gpus
- jhoelzel 3y agoWe just need to wait until the AI makes a better cheaper gpu for us all to enjoy ;)
- ftxbro 3y agoi watched the nvidia promo for their new chip and they are working on this with their software supplier who makes their chip designing software, they are helping them rewrite the software to benefit from gpu processing
- toadi 3y agoFucking hell... GPU is now as expensive as all the rest of the PC combined...
- jtode 3y agoNvidia is a shareholder corporation, these creatures can be relied upon to always act in the interest of profit, and then profit, and profit comes third after that. "What's a gamer?" -Nvidia's ceo in a couple weeks, probably
- hcks 3y agoI don’t get this comment. You’re trying to make a snarky comment about the morality of shareholder capitalism but clearly IA is a better allocation of resources than “more realistic AAAA video games”.
- jtode 3y agoYes, people should definitely get a beefy GPU and run their own AI server so that they can say "please design a mood lighting scheme for my house" and burn megawatts to set the dimmer instead of learning to use a smart switch with Home Assistant on a $100 5v SBC. Anyways, if Nvidia was pivoting out of some weird altruism attack where they suddenly decided, in defiance of their shareholders, to service the more constructive sector of AI instead of the (admittedly toxic af) gamer market, you might have something there. But they're pivoting because AI is momentarily at the top of the hype cycle and the capital is desperate for growth so there's a lot of exuberant attempts to force a bull market. That's why this is happening, sir, not for your vaunted higher social purposes of burning more power for simple tasks that people should damn well learn to do themselves. But yes, I have snark for you, if you're looking for it. The level of idiocy right now is higher than the levels of hydrogen in the universe, particularly about this new parlor trick.
- andrewstuart 3y agoThe worst thing is that AMD….. a distant second place…. seems completely uninterested in competing or winning against Nvidia. Nvidia has given AMD the biggest possible opportunity by charging insane prices and lately, with making garbage GPUs (4060/4070). AMD could rip Nvidia to shreds by taking this chance to price low and deliver powerful GPUs. Instead they seem content just to overcharge same as nvidia and make the same garbage cards as Nvidia. AMD has the technology… the 7900 XTX rasterisation performance is not far behind the nvidia rtx 4090. It’s weird. Maybe Lisa Su isn’t the right CEO for AMD. So we’re left to wait and hope that one day Intel will work out how to make a fast GPU.
- jacquesm 3y agoOr maybe she knows something that we do not. Such as AMDs yield and their ability to scale up. It's quite possible that AMD isn't able to price low and go for volume because that's not the market they are tooled up for.
- andrewstuart 3y agoYou’re saying maybe they can’t make enough cards to compete because their tech capabilities are below par?
- jacquesm 3y agoI'm not saying it is like that I'm saying there could be other factors invisible to us which close the door on low price/high volume plays. You'd assume that she has more than enough smarts to think about such options if they were on the table in the first place.
- andrewstuart 3y agoWhen a company is in second place and the first place company leaves a massive gate open for competition, then it’s the duty of the CEO to do what it takes to capitalize, attack and go for first place. Lisa Su has had plenty of time to do whatever needs to be done to take advantage of Nvidias opening. There’s no sign at all she’s doing anything. The 7600 GPU just released is garbage. All the AMD cards are still overpriced. How long do you give a CEO who fails to attack a vulnerable #1 ?
- 71a54xd 3y agoIMO using GPU's for gaming has been the single largest waste of computational progress over the past two decades. Literally facilitating someone to waste time toiling away at a fake challenge with pretty 3d visuals.
- delta_p_delta_x 3y ago> waste time I guess if people aren't working 24/7, they're all wasting time. While we're at it, let's also go and burn down all the art museums, take sledgehammers to all the sculptures, burn all fiction novels, rip up all the film reels, and so on. To step away from the hyperbole and actually discredit your opinion... > using GPU's for gaming has been the single largest waste of computational progress GPUs were invented and improved precisely because of video games. The pursuit for ever improving real-time visual fidelity at ever-increasing frame-rates and ever-increasing resolution has immediately facilitated and necessitated the immense performance of GPUs today. Video games and game engines are still amongst the most complex suites of software written today, perhaps only bested by the OSs they run on.
