‘Poison in every puff’: Canada to put warning labels on individual cigarettes
- Arrath 3y agoStill waiting for cigarettes that are 80% filter and 20% smokable, ala the Fifth Element.
- dieselgate 3y agoNot sure if it’s just Mexico or other central/South American countries but I’ve found the “fumar mata” labeling to be really effective. Complete with pictures of gross bodily harms. This is on packaging though and not individual cigs , which ironically these places you can buy individual cigs from street vendors unlike in the US
- olyjohn 3y agoCanada is already like this. Half the package is covered in pictures of rotting lungs, disgusting gums, etc. There is no unique branding on any of them, and they taste nothing like the American equivalent. The only other thing on them is the brand in black text with a white background, and it's not even a custom font, and there are no logos. Every pack looks the same.
- AdmiralAsshat 3y agoWell if I'm going to intentionally inhale poison, I'd be glad to know that at least I'm getting a consistent amount.
- olyjohn 3y agoNot sure that warning labels will help you with consistency.
- iamdamian 3y ago“When asked by reporters in Ottawa if there is any evidence that the labels will deter smoking, Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos said: ‘Every possible tool works.’” Um… What?
- pfannkuchen 3y agoWonder if this is an overly literal mental translation of a French idiom?
- grilledchickenw 3y agoYeah, that reply sounds irrelevant, but I can see this as meaning "Every little helps". Even if it deters one person from smoking, that's good.
- pxmpxm 3y agoThere's literally not a single person unaware of the downsides; the only benefit is to the politician signaling his/her bona fides.
- zogrodea 3y agoHumans are creatures with feelings as well. People believe exposure to certain messages (like advertising) influences people, whether consciously or no. Reminding of the downsides certainly can have an effect, even if that knowledge is already known.
- hulitu 3y ago> Reminding of the downsides certainly can have an effect Like in the joke: A smoker asks for a pack of cigarettes and receives a pack which says that smoking causes impotence. He returns the pack to the cashier and says he doesn't want the pack with impotence, he prefers the pack with lung cancer instead.
- bhhaskin 3y agoAt that point why not just ban the sell of them. It would be a lot easier. You don't need to go after individual smokers, and if they keep smoking that's on them.
- decremental 3y ago[dead]
- sneak 3y agoIt's politically unpopular.
- LocalH 3y agoAh yes, the new prohibition. It's worked swimmingly for everything else so far.
- uhohdidukno 3y ago[dead]
- sasaf5 3y agoWhen are we getting the same for suggary stuff?
- skellyclock 3y agoso what is the ink made out of lmao? seems like an addition to the already bountiful chemicals that get inhaled
- sys32768 3y agoDo Canadians still need to be reminded that inhaling cigarette smoke is unhealthy?
