The decision process is confusing. Python 2 -> Python 3 would have been an easier win but ok, not good enough. Python 2 -> Kotlin would be logical choice since Kotlin is already in use? Why introduce another language just to save some memory? Feels like a Resume++ by someone that just wanted to use Go.
