I'm not a passionate developer either, but I am a passionate problem solver, and I happen to have an expertise in solving problems with code.
That doesn't mean, however, I prefer to solve problems with code, just that it's the skill I've developed the most. My joy comes from seeing someone who had a pain no longer have that pain.
I'm of the opinion that if more developers thought of themselves this way, we'd sidestep a lot of the angst and consternation around the actual development process. No longer would it be about The Best Code, instead the team would focus on The Best Solution, and the new question would be, "How can we build something that can be worked with over time?"
