Intermural sports teams - highly recommend. At the right gym you'll also find community. Separately just being a regular at a bar is a very good way to get to know people, again you need to find the right spot. I'm not religious but I know many people who find community there. Other places I've seen friends have success are gaming guilds/circles and fraternities (Mason lodges, etc.) Speaking of which I grow my friend circle by meeting friends of friends and then developing my own first order friendships with them.
