- themerone 3y agoSQLite isn't growing in popularity. It's been a darling of the developer community for the last decade or two. If anything it has lost popularity as a number of modern embedded key value store have emerged. I love SQLite, but chill out on the hyperbole.
- bob1029 3y ago> chill out on the hyperbole. I do agree that SQLite has maybe been taken a bit too far in some areas, but I don't really see the harm. Starting with a local, in-proc database and it turning out to be not the best solution is a pretty small explosion compared to standing up a 3-cloud circus and spending 5+ figures before the customer calls it quits. I think there is a lot of magic that SQLite can offer for developers with an open mind. The ability to combine SQL+storage with application-defined functions enables an entire universe of possibilities that is simply not available or is poorly-modeled in other offerings. You can recursively call UDFs/triggers/queries from code/SQL and it all winds up in the same stack trace & debugger. This isn't just some fun trick. This is part of the foundation for an unbeatable inner-loop development experience. If you look at SQLite only through the lens of the various storage engines and their semantics, you are going to miss out on mountains of other things it can provide for you.
