I came here to say the same haha. It’s like an “article” or “preposition” in English. Arguably not required, but in practice invaluable. One could argue that shell could have been designed better to not need it but, meh, that ship sailed. Uses of “cat” are ubiquitous and excellent. Not sure why people remotely care when there are bigger problems to worry about.
