Personally I'd take a plane over train for anything more than about a three hour train ride. You still have to get to the train station and wait, even if it's not for as long. I took a 2 hour train trip recently (definitely better than flying) and I figured it took me about 4 hours door to door. I can do just as well flying ~500 km (e.g. Montreal to Toronto).
Arguably more of your time on a train trip can be productive, because you can settle in and work on the trip. I find the same is mostly possible for air travel if you use the lounge at the airport, but if you really are good at focusing you'll lose some time flying.
