In my travel experience, using a plane requires: 30-60 minutes to get to the airport, 60-120 minutes in the screwing around in the airport, a flight, 30-60 minutes screwing around in another airport and then spending 30-60 minutes getting from the airport into the city. That's like 2.5-5 hours in addition to the flight time (which includes pooping about on the tarmac). So a car (N America) or a train (Europe) is a greatly preferred alternative for 2-4 hour travels, possibly longer. And the stations are usually already downtown.

I took a 2 hour train trip recently (definitely better than flying) and I figured it took me about 4 hours door to door. I can do just as well flying ~500 km (e.g. Montreal to Toronto). Arguably more of your time on a train trip can be productive, because you can settle in and work on the trip. I find the same is mostly possible for air travel if you use the lounge at the airport, but if you really are good at focusing you'll lose some time flying.
