This is obvious if you just imagine the extreme case; someone in a yurt on some land with just LED lights and laptop/phone/Starlink to power. The cost of getting grid-tied alone would trivially blow out the cost of such a meager solar+battery+inverter setup. That's not even considering the recurring cost of power bills. But I would agree it probably doesn't make financial sense to transition off-grid if you've already got the power poles and meter connected outside. Especially with a sizable inefficient American house...
