Ever met a hard working but dumb person?
It can result in a lot of poorly done work that needs to be fixed or redone. They can create more problems than they fix.
Hard work cannot overcome extreme lack of talent.
- jyscao 3y agoYes indeed. Had a coworker at an old job who worked harder than me, but I'd always have to go back and fix his buggy code. For every feature he added, he'd cause a regression somewhere else. I legit felt bad for the guy. Also one of the few people I've known who was let go (after 3 months) for incompetence.
- ResearchCode 3y agoI would feel sorry for him too, because it sounds like the real problem was with your testing and code review process, not your very new co-worker. Why are your reviewers accepting broken patches?
- duk 3y agoThey are slow so they have to work hours to complete what would take a smart person minutes. So they can “look” like they are working harder. But you are right. Now that I think of it, never met a dumb hard working person. That’s why I do not think AI will make any dumb person smarter by “personalize” learning experience. How many dumb people do you think are using ChatGPT to satisfy their “curiosity”?
- waboremo 3y agoI question your definition of hard working, because to me hard working isn't just about being busy or looking busy. It's about getting the task done. For a task to be done, it has to be done correctly. It's like calling someone a hard working baker, but all they're doing is tossing flour into the oven. That's not hard working: that's just dumb.
- newsclues 3y agoYou can bake inedible bread. You can build a house that will fall apart. You can code a website with security vulnerabilities and bugs. Doing something and doing something well are not the same. But dumb or untalented people can accomplish a task in a substandard manner, and they may not even realize their work is substandard.
- waboremo 3y ago>substandard Then they have not completed the task. The task is to reach the standard. Someone who does not has not completed the task. This hard working but dumb person does not exist in reality. Dumb people do, but they are not hard working in whatever domain they are dumb in.
- newsclues 3y agoI understand and agree with that perspective. Not everyone lives by that however. Peoples standards are different. This is hypothetical, it's real and I have experienced people like this.
