Research Philosophy of Modern Cryptography
- FabHK 3y agoThe title and abstract is not very promising - largely a language issue, it seems to me (the paper seems translated from Chinese). The article is not about the philosophy of cryptography. A more descriptive title might be "A comprehensive classification scheme to research approaches in modern cryptography, with examples." This is what the authors do: 1. Survey the history of modern cryptography (post Diffie & Hellman's 1976 seminal paper New Directions in Cryptography). 2. In particular, examine ("Bob's") improvements to ("Alice's") existing solutions of cryptographic problems (where improvements are "above and beyond", ie better and novel). 3. Classify and categorise those improvements (in 3 Ways → 6 Types → 17 Benefit Areas → 40 Research Strategies). 4. For each of those 40 paradigmatic Research Strategies, apply it to one fixed artificial example problem ("Group Signatures"), and then list a few examples of papers that have applied it to real-world problems. The goal, from what I gather, is to 1. give beginners to the field an overview of the research paradigms/strategies/approaches/Ansätze along which the field has progressed, and 2. give experienced researchers ideas of which approach (what they call "research philosophy") they could try to find the next improvement.
- MattPalmer1086 3y agoIt's an interesting classification of different research strategiea. It does show how cryptographic ideas or primitives were and can be developed in various ways. I'm not sure how complete a survey of modern cryptography it is. I think the value is principally in the research classification.
