As someone with 10+ Alexa devices between homes I honestly didn't realize anyone was actively working on Alexa anymore. It used to be mildly useful for playing music and setting timers but it has degraded in almost every aspect since inception. Also, its suggestions are beyond useless and get in the way of actually using the devices.
- scrum-treats 3y agoThat's the "Teacher Model" effect. Pretty dismal, eh? Not to mention the fact that those devices are able to open up the mic and camera ports without prompting (i.e., whenever Amazon wants). Remember that craze of teaching Alexa to recognize different sounds[1]? Everyone who participated allowed Amazon to increase its precision in audio surveillance. Anyone who has Alexa App installed on their phones is allowing Amazon ability to monitor activity across all devices connected via wifi/bluetooth. Unsettling is not the correct word, but it's a good start. It's spyware[2].
