Japan plans to release Fukushima wastewater to the Pacific – is it dangerous?
- WhereIsTheTruth 3y agoI find it interesting that the article doesn't mention China, it's right next to them, and it's a substantial amount of people that depend on fishing from that area, they have been opposing it since day 1: http://www.news.cn/english/2021-12/22/c_1310388252.htm http://www.news.cn/english/2021-12/22/c_1310388252.htm That would also impact the Japanese, I don't understand why it was proposed, either incompetence, or corruption..

- hilbert42 3y agoThis is behind a paywall so possibly I'm repeating stuff in the story. The waste is supposedly low level (highly diluted) tritium and not much else so I've heard. If diluted sufficiently and spread over a wide enough area then it's likely the safest, most practical and the most environmentally sound way of disposing of it. Tritium has a half life of a bit over 12 years and it's a low level beta emitter with low energy (low range, low penenetrative ability) so it seems to me all the whingeing is a bit of a beat-up—the usual nuclear scaremongering. Of course, the devil's in the detail and we need to told the facts without any B/S before any release.
