One thing I've notices over the decades of improving as a software engineer that that the deeper I could understand things, the better abstractions I could produce where I didn't need to understand things -- which actually was the goal. That is, the deep understanding of an abstraction is required so that you can confidently use it without having to worry about the possible side-effects that those with shallow understanding inevitably introduce.
