I picked up Ubuntu 14 years ago because it ran twice as fast on my parent's Dell laptop as Windows XP, and because I didn't have to worry nearly as much about getting a virus on it. I didn't learn Linux using it that way, but I was immersed in it in a way that made the whole thing much easier when I finally took the plunge last year and started seeking work for real as a software engineer, instead of as an electrical engineer, which was what I went to college in. I rarely read the manpages. I know a handful of switches and I prefer to ask the live Internet for easier material.
