Chip wars with China risk ‘enormous damage’ to US tech, says Nvidia chief

- throwaway4good 3y agoFrom the article: “If we are deprived of the Chinese market, we don’t have a contingency for that. There is no other China, there is only one China,” “If the American tech industry requires one-third less capacity [due to the loss of the Chinese market], no one is going to need American fabs, we will be swimming in fabs,” he said. “If they’re not thoughtful on regulations, they will hurt the tech industry.” Wildly political incorrect in todays environment.
- rvz 3y agoEvery chip and computer company knows the problem of their sole dependence on TMSC and other chip manufacturers in Taiwan and that China may one day put all of that entirely at risk. The point is, it is always possible. Thus, it is not about 'if' but when, and worse when 'even if' since almost no-one has a plan when that happens. It will be a sight to behold when high flying euphoria and hype in the stock market prices not accounting for that possibility which will end up correcting once that happens. Especially with the major chip companies, experiencing euphoria in AI. Given that Nvidia's CEO knows this, then the rest of the computing world should plan ahead over that possible risk and not wait until it is too late. Apple is already de-risking this possibility and is moving its manufacturing outside of China, which is a great start. Shouldn't it be that the US is putting that entirely at risk as well by denying Chinese companies from being able to use the fabs that are created in what China considers its own province? Why put all the blame on China? This is exactly what Nvidia's CEO is talking about.
