How do you know you're being shot at to know you should move out of the way?

  You probably know when in the flight you should expect to be a target based on the locations of laser batteries -- given atmospheric absorption and dispersion they're going to have limited range. Worst case, make your entire flight path unpredictable.

      It is, in vacuum. Less so in the atmosphere -- especially if you're aerodynamically unstable to begin with.

      I think the idea is that you notice heating and maneuver before you heat up too much. Whether that works depends on how long the laser burst is.
