I was sympathetic and open to tipping in more situations during the height of the pandemic, but now it has become such an annoyance. Lately I've drawn a hard line in the sand and only tip full service wait staff and bartenders, with only a few other exceptions.
The whole idea in the first place was that those jobs are allowed to pay less than minimum wage because providing good service could earn the employee potentially far more money through tips. That's the social contract we agreed to, which is now being contorted to absurd extremes.

Why not pay them the wage for the job as described and have tipping as the reward for exceptional service?
- glitcher 3y agoGood question, I don't know why the United States does it this way or how/when it started. I realize other countries have different practices, some arguably much better, this is just what I grew up being familiar with.
- bsder 3y agoIt's even worse than that. All these "tipping" and "donation" are primarily there to earn the credit processsor more percentage. A lot of the money never goes to where it should. I don't tip on credit card except at restaurants. Everywhere else, if I'm tipping, it's cash into a jar, or I'm simply not tipping. And if I see your "charity" on a processor screen, I will add you to my "never donate to them list".
