I mean, you don't need to be a conspiracy theorist to understand that, when they give you 3% cash back, the credit card company has to be making at least that much more by selling something.
(That "something", of course, is transaction data.)

I don't think tracking purchases is worth 3% cashback for the average credit card customer (FB make around $10 each user whilst tracking their entire life on the internet). 3% is probably a loss leading/introductory offer, but 1-2% is paid for by retailer charges. There's a good breakdown of who pays and receives what in a $100 purchase in the figure half way down the article here: https://www.economist.com/special-report/2023/05/15/the-old-bank/card-model-is-still-entrenched-in-the-rich-world https://www.economist.com/special-report/2023/05/15/the-old-... archived at https://archive.ph/CNFx3 https://archive.ph/CNFx3
- ggm 3y agoThe "they" in "they are tracking us" isn't the bank and their BI on your spend: its the WorldGovernment-Barcode-BillGates-JewishConspiracy-QueenIsAnAlien-AntVaxx mob. But your point is well made. We are tracked, constantly. I note, that the same people decrying using square and stripe payment at the market, carry mobile phones with GPS, and Layer1/2 tracking to cell tower just like everyone else..
