Ask HN: Do other industries do something resembling a daily standup?
- WheelsAtLarge 3y agoRetail, it's very common for floor personnel - similar but not the same.
- JamesVI 3y agoRestaurants. Usually just before opening or just before the dinner rush. You go over specials. assign sections, etc. Construction. Scrum is (allegedly) inspired by the morning briefing on a construction site where the electricians warn the plumbers they are going to turn on the power to floor X. Military. Before every mission and daily standing orders for officer of the day, officer of the watch etc.
- Juliate 3y agoYou mean, a morning review routine? Yes, in all my pre-diploma and summer jobs (not computer related: administration, woodwork, music publishing office, energy engineering office) in the 90’s. Only, never as dogmatic and unproductive as the ones I’ve seen as scrum/agile mandated stuff. Just a natural human focused status checking.
- zhte415 3y agoCommon in many kinds of operations, it's quite prevalent in operations management and embedded in lean and similar methodologies. Here's an example, https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=rWg2oouZ2k0 https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=rWg2oouZ2k0
- rektide 3y agoThere's been some interesting comments here, but I have a hard time imagining every single person taking a turn in most of these systems. Scrum forcing everyone to make a commitment & report back in on it still seems fairly unique.
- readonthegoapp 3y agoyeah, the whole idea of report back on your work/yesterday/commitment is the squeeze that might be new. i have to find out where 'report back' requirement part of Scrum comes from.
