Well, they set up hCaptcha, but apparently it's just a temporary solution. There's also a discussion regarding hCaptcha not being floss and not being GDPR compliant. I think they have to discuss the next steps now. It is nice to see that competent people work on mastodon and were able to stop this very quickly.
