I at one point spent a hundred bucks and bought a used JDSU DSAM 3300 cable testing meter. It's only rated for DOCSIS 3, but I can get some good info out of it about my local cable plant and figure out if it's my side or the outside plant. Then they show up and use their shiny new Viavi (formerly JDSU) OneExpert... and see the same thing and fix their shit. ;)
