Yeah I'm unhappy with Brother as an option as there is no FreeBSD support (the official Linux PPDs do a bunch of weird voodoo with bundled pre-compiled binaries of Ghostscript etc that I was unable to untangle). There's a PPD on openprinting but it's black-and-white only and doesn't support all of the printer's features.

Yup, that’s the one! I remember having some issues on Arch as well. Had to unpack and dissect the official drivers that Brother provide for Debian or w/e distro was it.
