  tl;dw: surveillance has many forms, many of which not obvious in modern society; most political arguments for more surveillance don't really hold once you examine the evidence; surveillance isn't a panacea for crime prevention; and there are significant consequences to consider, which go beyond the act of surveillance itself (e.g. chilling effects in a "panopticon" society).
