I agree. Nevertheless I’d love to see the USA spend more on research. Many highly skilled people get PhDs here with the hopes of doing academic research but end up having to leave due to lack of opportunities. Maybe the current state is optimal. Those talented people often go on to work in industry after all. But how to decide if it’s optimal?
