What to make of bizarre off-topic questions during job interview (2018)
- ftxbro 3y agoIt's a corporate shit test. A shit test is a manufactured grievance a corporation uses to test the mettle, competence and confidence of its prospective employee. It is an intentional provocation accompanied by an implicit and subconscious desire that the prospective employee put his foot down, set reasonable boundaries and demonstrate that they will not be bullied, nagged, shamed or guilted into submission. Its purpose is to confirm for the corporation that the prospective employee is capable of doing what needs to be done to provide for and protect the corporation and its subsidiaries. The subconscious thought process is, "If the prospective employee can't stand up to me, how will he be able to deal with the suits in corporate who keep us up all night with their bureaucratic machinations, let alone help bag a big client or fend off the software bugs or the angry customers?" The worst thing a prospective employee can do when his corporation is shit testing them is assume the grievance is genuine and cave in to the interviewers. Despite them seeming to demand that the interviewee submit, if they do, the corporation will lose respect for the prospective employee, and once the corporation loses respect they will believe that they have invited a prospective employee who is not a good culture fit, which in turn makes the interviewers angry and resentful of the prospective employee. The interviewers will then escalate the tests, each grievance becoming more and more outrageous and irrational in a desperate bid for the prospective employee to finally draw a line and say, "this far, no further."
