Orcas sink 3 boats in Europe and appear to teach others to do the same. But why?
- ftxbro 3y agoorcas will do it for the lulz
- mimd 3y ago"Hey...hey...hey Bob...look, it's one of those weird surface fish! Let's mess with it!" "Ah good. Needed a new toy. My seal chew toy was getting a bit mushy." - Bob and Jerry, orca bros
- amacalac 3y agoSimply, why not?
- garbagecoder 3y agoThis noisy animal that floats on the surface of the water smells bad and has a really sharp tail so I decided to kill it. Nothing a cat wouldn't do.
- pg_1234 3y agoNothing a human child wouldn't do.
- dathinab 3y agoIDK, but boats emit into the sea a lot of noise this kind of sea animal are sensitive to, like _a really high amount_. it's like being forced to live on a airport and then you realize if you damage the planes they don't take of and in turn aren't so painful loud
- colanderman 3y agoThe attacks are mostly directed at sailboats, not motorboats.
- RecycledEle 3y agoSail boats almost always have combustion engines as back-ups and for maneuvering in and out of ports.
- myshpa 3y agoWe're overfishing ... maybe they're just (a|hu)ngry.
- xenospn 3y agoWhat do you mean “why”? Has anything good ever come to orcas from getting close to a boat?
- simonblack 3y agoHumans have been killing orcas for years and years. It's about time that humans got a taste of the same treatment. Humans are just bigger, fatter seals. And they're not as fast in the water.
- gavaw 3y agoShowing that orcas can naturally be aggressive and attack humans unprovoked throws a giant wrench on the media machinery that generated the documentary "Blackfish", which revolved on the supposed fact that orcas go crazy when they are held in SeaWorld parks.
- pg_1234 3y agoThere's nothing to prove it's "natural" aggression, it's quite plausible that some asshole in a boat shot or rammed one or more orcas, perhaps a juvenile, and now the pod is feeling vengeful.
- two_in_one 3y agoThree females attacked small boats for years with impunity. For fun most likely. Now they got bored of just bumping and breaking rudders. Why? They are intelligent, they have a lot of free time, and not that many toys to play with. And they are top predators, nothing to fear. They will be doing it till hunted down or punished somehow. Not that I'm voting for it, but without lessons of respect they will never unlearn their bad habits. It's just a matter of time till they kill someone, or start killing intentionally.
- pg_1234 3y agoHumans killed whales for years with impunity. And they are top predators, nothing to fear. They will be doing it till hunted down or punished somehow. Without lessons of respect they will never unlearn their bad habits.
- trillic 3y agoSailboat rudder is to an Orca... a fun play toy. It's big, smooth, and heavy. It moves when the whale pushes it and it also causes the boat to change direction!
