The good thing about making this about WhatsApp is that UK MPs and most political hangers-on use WhatsApp *extensively*. If opponents point out that government scheming, speaker circuit bookings, fast-track lanes for government contracts, and the like will become more difficult, then maybe MPs will reconsider.
Unencrypted and on-the-public-record political party and government communications will worry MPs more than it worries "terrorists and paedos".
- jgust 3y agoThat sounds like an argument for banning WhatsApp in favor of transparency...
- Delphiza 3y agoThe UK government will never pass legislation to increase transparency to their own conduct (I doubt any government would), so encryption and opacity will remain.
- dragonwriter 3y ago> The UK government will never pass legislation to increase transparency to their own conduct (I doubt any government would) Lots of governments do.
- dgb23 3y agoCan you share more? I'm interested in both success stories and failed attempts.
- dragonwriter 3y agoThe whole set of overlapping classes of “freedom of information”, “open meeting”, and “sunshine”/“digital sunshine” laws are all laws adopted by various jurisdictions directed at the transparency of government operations and official conduct within certain bounds.
- euix 3y agoGood point, if the government removes privacy focused apps from the public what are they going to use?
- rapsey 3y agoJust like every other country. The world literally runs on WhatsApp.
