Astronomers Disturbed by the Unexpected Scale of James Webb’s Galaxies
- sharemywin 3y agoI don't know why the "big bang" isn't just thought of as a giant explosion that pushed existing galaxies out of the way. what if big bangs happen all the time? on a scale of trillions of years or something.
- ksaj 3y agoI agree with the question. Something as big as the Big Bang happening once and only once is quite an anomaly to believe in.
- jfengel 3y agoThe Big Bang isn't an explosion in space. It's an explosion of space. There isn't anything to push out of the way. The space itself for those galaxies to be in didn't exist. It's the space itself that's expanding. One interesting property of that is that it can expand faster than the speed of light. Objects within space can't do that. So there's no way for there to be pre-existing galaxies that we're just belatedly observing. (And incidentally, even if there were, they'd have been destroyed by the hot, dense state prior to the recombination event that gave rise to the Cosmic Microwave Background.)
- rektide 3y ago> The figure below shows the five galaxies with their stellar masses determined by both ways. I don't see this figure on the page. Anyone have a better link?
