Disney Removes Dozens of Series from D+ & Hulu, Including ‘Big Shot’, ‘Willow’
- jarym 3y agoIt's not great that so many streamers are ditching their content like this. What isn't clear to me (even after reading a linked article), is what exactly is the cost of keeping a title 'available' on the platform? For a few years now I have been put off when I open Netflix because there's just SO much content on there that I don't even know how to find something I'd enjoy even though I know there is stuff I'd enjoy in their catalogue. Is it just me or does it seem like in an age of AI-recommender systems, streaming TV recommendations algorithms haven't kept up.
- interestica 3y agoWhat's absurd is that I face this impression that there's not a lot of content -- because the same stuff gets pushed to the top by the existing system. It's quite difficult to dig down -- and that pain varied greatly depending on the app/OS.

And in the case of Willow, they own the property outright. The only conclusion is that this is to get out of paying residuals. During a strike. article though implies a write-off: >The move, which comes with a content impairment charge of $1.5 billion to $1.8 billion, was announced during the recent Disney earnings call on May 10.
- rektide 3y agoCorporations being monsters is by far the easiest Occam's Razer view of this. "Abuse of power comes as no surprise." What an evil world it is, that we have such large anti-human entities for people to contend with.
- bacchusracine 3y agoThere is an option which keeps these shows alive forever, so long as one person loves them enough to take custody and maintain them independently. Sadly it is not an option that many consider.
- adrianmsmith 3y agoFrom https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Willow_(TV_series) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Willow_(TV_series) : > premiered on the streaming service Disney+ on November 30, 2022 ... The series will be removed from Disney+ on May 26, 2023 That's quite something, to go through the effort of making a TV series, just to delete it 6 months after you released it!
- pipeline_peak 3y agoFor Netflix/Hulu, Disney Channel is like a toilet paper roll veteran for shitty tv shows.
- justinclift 3y agoWonder how long Firefly will keep on being available...
