Burying used plastic in the ground seems like a better way to capture carbon. Forrests can catch on fire and the trees decay over time releasing the stored carbon back into the atmosphere. Why not bury all the plastic that's produced onced it's used rather than try to recycle it. We know that recycling it is mostly a waste of time and energy. Also, we don't seem to want to switch to any type of substitute. Plastic has the advantage of being very stable over time and can hold on to the carbon it contains for a very long time. Additionally, if we are smart, we can bury all of it in one place. We can then mine it should we ever need the material in the future.
I thought about burying trees. But decomposing plant matter has the side effect of releasing methane which is a climate change gas that we need to manage. Leaving us in the same situation.
- ZeroGravitas 3y agoThere's a few startups investigating burying trees for carbon capture. This article has an overview: https://www.technologyreview.com/2022/12/15/1065016/a-stealth-effort-to-bury-wood-for-carbon-removal-has-just-raised-millions/ https://www.technologyreview.com/2022/12/15/1065016/a-stealt... They either keep them bone dry or pickle them in brine to prevent decomposition, though they're still at the stage of proving how effective this is long term.
