I’ve only seen self organising teams in a flat structure fail, on count that if everyone is responsible for everything there are many things no one is responsible for. I think “bike shedding” is very much a thing. Most people will hitch their contribution to what they can understand leaving many of the hard and but vague things in the wind.

There is a good piece of work around how these mostly self-organising communities are built, with a special focus on the ZeroMQ community [1]. Needless to say, it takes an enormous amount of effort and knowledge to get such a system going (so initial design and effort from particular individuals is a given). - usgroup 3y agoThank you — very useful reference and an apt observation RE OS communities. Although a cursory look at the page seems to show considerable individual involvement in making it work.
