Yeah it’s pretty dark when you think about it
- krapp 3y agoStar Trek's canon history is pretty dark too. The gradual breakdown of societies leading to mass homelessness and unemployment, and events like the Bell riots, World War 3, global genocide, colonization and "recivilization" of post-apocalyptic humanity by benevolent aliens. then magically "utopia," where humanity goes off into the stars to discover a galaxy full of violent alien empires and reality-bending eldritch horrors, and from that point on every week or so some weird alien whatsit boils the oceans or eats a planet or turns people inside out or something.
- rbanffy 3y ago> The gradual breakdown of societies leading to mass homelessness and unemployment We're getting there, it seems. Now we need to find the benevolent aliens.
- krapp 3y ago> We're getting there, it seems. That's the whole point. >Now we need to find the benevolent aliens. Unfortunately, in reality I think we're all we have. Which should have been the timeline in ST as well, since it's more aspirational. That the Vulcans had interfere sort of undermines the whole theme of humanity overcoming its flaws through sheer undaunted effort and positivity. Nope, turns out we would have hit the Great Filter headon and died in the rubble if the Vulcans hadn't seen one alcoholic madman make a warp joyride near Mars, and decided we needed to be housebroken for the good of the galaxy.
- rbanffy 3y agoWe can replace the benevolent aliens with trekkies, hopefully. If we are clever, we may even avoid a couple wars in the meantime and ditch capitalism.
