Google Voice Search cannibalized search since forever, without being monetizable. Google realized the importance of ML/AI early, and has had a coherent AI strategy that predates most AI companies - I would argue Google's strategy precipitated the existence of those companies by performing and publishing foundational research in the field. Pixel phones are a masterclass of applied ML in a very humane way one might expect from Apple- e.g. call screening with realtime transcription.
