Schwarzenegger: Environmentalists are delaying green energy revolution
- ggm 3y agoInsert the word 'some' and a lot of people might agree, since this is an instance of gradualist vs revolutionary approach to change. It's a linear optimisation problem. What if using more LNG now stops use of coal? Is that better than trying to move to solar only or solar plus wind? What if wind offshore scales faster than wind onshore because of land rights issues? What if nuclear would displace more LNG and coal than solar sooner? Of course there are counter arguments. I'm not a Schwarzenegger supporter, but he's got the kernel of a valid point. Trajectory to a goal is different to solving a problem and can take different paths and can land on different points which solve the problem, or are closer or further away from the goal. Some people want highly specific goals and reject local optima which are visible but differ from the specific goal in solving a problem.
- uoaei 3y agoI would agree but caution that the effects of adopting different fuels for energy is far from linear. Must consider especially infrastructure ramp-up/-down when switching. This changes the calculations considerably and moves the optima from where they would be expected given a first-order analysis.
- ggm 3y agoI don't for a minute think the decisions are trivial. It's balancing off issues. The point is, some people want a specific outcome, some want one in a range of choices. Some opportunistically want to make money in the margins
