Ask HN: How do you find new music?
I feel like Spotify recommendations, artist radio, and "Discovery Weekly" has become an echo chamber of music that's fine, but isn't that interesting, or new. What are some better ways to discover new music?
- sgt 3y agoI've recently listened to SomaFM a lot. No idea what I'm actually listening to but it's great coding music.
- ttctciyf 3y agohttps://everynoise.com/ https://everynoise.com/ might be worth a look - start from an artist that you like and explore their genres
- yuppie_scum 3y agoTen years ago it was the Pandora algorithm. It really did a good job of distilling genres. (Spotify has never quite been able to match this for me, though sometimes the “mood” playlists provide good results) These days, I read a lot of music biographies, and that tends to lead me down interesting paths. Read about Bowie, you’ll learn about Mick Ronson, the Stooges, etc. Read about the Talking Heads, you’ll learn about Fela Kuti. Read about the Beastie Boys, you’ll learn about.. well almost everything.
- surprisetalk 3y agoI find lots of music by browsing the charts at https://rateyourmusic.com https://rateyourmusic.com When I’m feeling adventurous, I just pick a year or decade and start listening to the most hi hi my rated albums I haven’t heard yet. Their genre categories are great too
- anderiv 3y agoRYM is an absolute gem. I’ve used it nearly every day since first hearing about it a year ago or so. When trying to discover new artists, I typically start with one I know and then follow the genre rabbit trail and see where it lands.
- RF_Enthusiast 3y agoI watched Eurovision, and now have enough excellent music to hold me over for a few months. Cha Cha Cha, y'all.
- prxtl 3y agoI love listening to https://radioparadise.com https://radioparadise.com especially when I don't want to choose what to listen to. Apart from their main stream, they have special streams for mellow, rock, and "world" music (don't like that word, but it is what it is).
- throwaway019254 3y agoI go through https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2023_in_heavy_metal_music https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2023_in_heavy_metal_music and listen to just released albums.
- milleniall 3y agoI listen to John Digweeds Transitions every week.
- psychstudio 3y agoRabbit holes on the metal archives.
- kratom_sandwich 3y agoHaving Shazam ready on my phone to identify music I'm coming across randomly has yielded some nice additions to my playlist.
- ackatz 3y agosputnikmusic.com and go through Trending Albums
- zerr 3y agoThe most effective for me is FM radio.
- vanilla-almond 3y agoBBC Radio 6 Music is specialising primarily in "alternative" music (alternative rock, pop, R&B etc). Try a listen.
- comprev 3y agoYouTube suggestions, Reddit, IG, Facebook groups, Deezer playlists, Podcasts, Bandcamp suggestions, even IMDB for soundtracks of films I've enjoyed.
- Matthew911 3y ago[dead]
- mikewarot 3y agoYouTube offers up playlists of music, sometimes there are interesting things I've not heard before. https://radio.garden https://radio.garden is fun too
- tomcam 3y ago1. Search “jukebox” and the latest Bollywood/Tollywood musicals on YouTube 2. Distractingly good music in high quality TV shows. Those music directors for US tv shows are insanely good music curators 3. My kid 4. Guitar song or style tutorials on YouTube
- mrobins 3y agoI also feel like my Spotify playlists have gone cold. Once I had 6 covers in a row. I’ve recently switched to Qobuz which is more editorial and less algorithmic. Overall very happy with their recs.
- mdwalters 3y agoi just randomly find them. if i happen to like them, i would add it to my playlist
