OpenAI making intentionally racist and sexist models (or just extremely uninteresting and less competent; whatever the twitter mobs consider "safe" this week) isn't so much of an issue when people are free to train, fine-tune, and operate their own. In fact, OpenAI's freedom to make models that espouse whatever views they like ought to be strongly protected no matter how ill advised or repugnant. But now OpenAI is lobbying the government to make it unlawful for others to do their own thing and that changes the equation significantly.
