What Eben Upton said about RISC-V
- musicale 3y agoSeems like a reasoned take - RISC-V for now looks like it can be an option when you don't need performance or software compatibility. But newer designs are likely to improve both absolute performance and performance per watt, and the RISC-V ecosystem is likely to grow. On an unrelated note, I'm still frustrated how Raspberry Pi seems to have prioritized business customers over individual enthusiasts and students.

They have openly said they are. Unlike you, I have no issue with the decision. But I have also been able to get 3 additional RPi 4 at retail for list price since the supply issues began so the impact on me has been minimal.
- sohkamyung 3y agoThings may return to normal by next year [1]: > Jeff Geerling, having flown to Raspberry Pi's headquarters in Cambridge, England, with his supporters' backing, digs in on Upton's "Supply chain update" from December 2022. Upton said then that by the third quarter of 2023, "hundreds of thousands" of mainstream Pi units should be available, with Zero units, then 3 and 3B models, then 4. - tmzt 3y agoCould the RP2040 ROM be adapted for RISC-V creating a defacto standard for emulating features that aren't implemented by the specific RV-variant? I'd also love to see a big-little implementation with a Linux capable RV paired (gateable) with the above M4-class RV and the state machines from the RP2040.
