I use a $25 Asus "Wi-Fi repeater" which runs OpenWRT instead of their crippled firmware, allowing it be a plain Wi-Fi access point acting as a VLAN extension of my little SoHo switch. An entirely uncomplicated setup that just won't misbehave on its own.
