It makes for an awkward situation
Well, yeah.
These kinds of questions are indeed extremely useful: for demonstrating quickly and plainly just how much a self-impressed asshole the interviewer is. And, implicitly, how asshole-enchanted (and intellectually shallow, overall) management must be for putting this person in charge of anything.
No need to put in a show of thanking them for their time on your way out. Being as they've already abandoned any pretense of professionalism by this point, you can issue whatever obscenities as you like, in fact. Either way be sure to thank yourself for salvaging the rest of your day, and for another bullet dodged.
- tgbk 3y agoThis question doesn't work well for all company types/sizes/stages and not everyone does well on it (including those two people with a confluence of a crummy attitude and outrageously silly answers I mentioned). Judging by your profane response and projection of feelings, you may have not fit in on our small team. I'm sure you've found success elsewhere, and I appreciate your passionate feedback.
- lisasays 3y agoIf you'd prefer a more Spock-like explanation: It's definitely not an interesting or useful question (and if you think that it only appeals to creative/playful/cooperative types, you're very mistaken). And for that reason, plus the 20 Questions style, "Guess what level of detail will satisfy me" it conveys a basic lack of respect for the candidate's intelligence -- and most especially, their time. It's as if you're basically saying to them: "I'm starting to think you might be a dullard, or uncooperative, or that you just plain can't think your way out of a wet paper bag. Prove to me otherwise." You might think it comes off as cute or fun somehow, but really, it just comes off as arrogant and presumptuous.
- tgbk 3y agoAlmost everything you have said in response has been arrogant and presumptuous. They are your opinions and you're absolutely entitled to them, but you have made it abundantly clear that _you_ may be a "self-impressed asshole". I can't confirm you are one because I've never met you in person, but how about this? If you want to give me a ring and talk through why this has been a valuable exercise outside of the small part of the story you've cherrypicked to try and make a point, my contact info is in the post. Email me and I'll make time for a phone call or video chat.
