An Apple Headset Is Coming. Can It Be More Than a Nerd Helmet?
- throwaway_1237 3y agoNerd Helmet? Ouch.
- spacedcowboy 3y agoshrug Maybe I've just got to the age (Happy Birthday to me!) where I've run out of fucks to give but I don't care if someone thinks "nerd!" if they see me. It's not as if my sartorial elegance is anything to write home about anyway :)
- JohnFen 3y ago> I don't care if someone thinks "nerd!" if they see me. Am I the only one who considers that a compliment?
- hipshaker 3y agoHardly, and I do think that headline smells of a high school jock attitude. I know art nerds, science nerds, business nerds, music nerds, all kinds of nerds. I see it as badge of devotion, focus and skill in an area. If you’re a grown-up.
- hipshaker 3y agoAs far as burns go that gave me a suntan
- esafak 3y ago"Oh, oh, no, yes, no, NO, yes, ah, ah, ah ahhhhh... oh, your helmet is so big..."
- deafpolygon 3y agoKnock on my door! Knock next time! Yes sir! Did you see any thing?! No sir, I didn't see you playing with your dolls again!
- lamplovin 3y agobit of revisionist history going on here if they think that those products weren't sleek enough or stylish from the start. It was the functionality that people got used to, but those products were always relatively stylish enough to not be branded a "nerd <x>." For example, a quick google search on the first CNET iPhone review shows it was considered stylish from the start -https://www.cnet.com/tech/mobile/original-iphone-review/ https://www.cnet.com/tech/mobile/original-iphone-review/
- eq88 3y agoThey are referring to Cellphones, Portable Music Players, and Wearables. None were "sexy" until Apple came along and became the trend setters. It's going to be harder for apple to do it with VR or AR tech, but it is possible. It probably won't catch on until Gen 3-4 once the ecosystem is up to speed, consumer price drops, and the true function emerges beyond perceived hype.
- Qweiuu 3y agoIt would literally mean wearing this thing on your face. Alone from a pure beauty standpoint this would mean destroying your hair and makeup for what? Probably not for a selfie
- canadianfella 3y ago[dead]
- hammyhavoc 3y agoThere were plenty of cellphones that people loved the "sexy" design of, which did well commercially. Motorola RAZR for one, particularly the v3 "Noir", Danger Sidekick/Hiptop, especially the 2 and 3 with teens. The modding/customizing scene was a sensation at one point, was big with the hip-hop scene. Lots of celebrities made it a desirable thing. This is without even getting into the obvious of BlackBerry.
- DIVx0 3y agoI'll happily wear this nerd helmet if Apple can deliver on the experience and usability.
- keenmaster 3y agoFirst Gen Apple AR headset + LLM = device for hyperefficient work by voice That’s assuming it’s physically large. As it gets smaller, it becomes more of a general purpose AR device that can overlay any context, information, or visual transformation onto your environment and allow physical-digital interaction and social experiences. First gen should in theory be that too, but in practice if it does look too big then people won’t use it in that manner as much as they use it as a panoramic monitor. Nonetheless it will start the flywheel of AR development and technology in the Apple ecosystem to lay the groundwork for mass adoption. Apple can also use AR to lure people away from Windows and PCs, since the glasses presumably can be used as a souped up Mac. But since Apple is an ecosystem provider, they need to have world class AI in-house, if not now then at some point (otherwise competitor’s AR devices will be more feature complete in an important way). That’s not impossible given Apple’s cash pile, but it is something they’ll need to develop new capabilities around and dedicate resources to.
- Qweiuu 3y agoI think there is a problem with AR: usefulness vs. Effort. Effort: Expensive, needs energy (a lot it's a display, needs to track things), needs to be weared, breaks your outfit (makeup hair) Benefit: ? I can see people sitting on a couch or in the bed with switch like controllers but
- keenmaster 3y agoIt won’t require tabletop space, but can show you any number of screens, presumably can track where you’re looking for context, and theoretically can use less energy to power its display than 1 large laptop display and certainly less than 2 (laptop + external monitor) - you can always carry a powerbank and/or charger in your backpack, which you’re used to if you lug around a laptop or gaming device. You can also use an AR device while mobile, unlike a laptop. This is just talking of the “panoramic monitor” capability, without getting into more AR-native features which will become increasingly important and be more impactful.

- Qweiuu 3y agoEither this will be tremendously funny, niche were it doesn't matter or a very very weird future. And yes the imagination of suddenly people sitting with not just some vr glasses from anyone but apple ones on a couch isolated from reality oh boy.
- michelb 3y agoHow about having an article asking about whether ‘we’ are ready for a sleek set of glasses with a camera in it that fulfills the promise of AR? Much more interesting than talking about a ‘nerd helmet’.
