This. The HMRC system is excellent and should be in the realm of possibility for America. The UK economy is very similar to ours. And as an American who lived in the UK for a few years I did have to file a self assessment, which had me pretty scared. My UK tax return was ~5 pages long and took me ~2 hours to complete. My US tax return for the same year was ~200 pages long and took an accountant weeks to complete. I don't do anything interesting (I have a wage-earning job and some stock investments, I own no property in any country).
