I have found it to be good in cases where I need a rough outline of something. For programming, I often ask it for some modules in language X that can do Y. Sometimes it surprises me and lists something I have not heard of. Other times it makes stuff up. I think to use it well, you have to be some what of a subject matter expert in the topic you are asking about.
