The dollar isn't popular because people like america or have confidence american economy is superior to china or europe. They want the dollar because they can use it to exchange currency and goods with any country. By want, I mean overall demand of the dollar not T bonds or whatever. If Yuan/RMB was most in demand, that would mean it is easier to accept Yuan in exchange for an export of some sort to $randomcountry and then use Yuan to buy stuff from india, vietnam,UK,Canada,etc... who would want to accept Yuan for the stuff I want to buy from them. The perceived acceptability of the currency is very important, at least as much as how strong the economy behind it is.
