you listen to too many podcasts with ideas seeded by US thinktank/foreign policy 'blob' types.
thailand is a military dictatorship that allows chinese businesses to operate inside of it while billing themselves as thai.
vietnam is run by the communist party of vietnam and also hosts chinese owned factories. read that again. did you catch the part where they're run by THE COMMUNIST PARTY?
the taiwanese will not blow up tsmc. it's the only thing they have going for them in the western foreign policy board game. the US blob loves saying this, because it tickles some part of the ego that wants to take its ball and go home when it can't get its way.
i think the entire line of thinking in US foreign policy is just utterly insane when it comes to asia.
- klooney 3y agoVietnam is very much it's own thing with a strained relationship with China, they're not a vassal state. I think in retrospect, Communism was never as post nationalist as people pretended at the time, and was just "the available motivating ideology". Kind of like how all revolutionaries were Islamic State for a few years.
- NhanH 3y agoChina is by far the most hated country among the Vietnamese population. Not rationally, mind you, and the government's propaganda tends to avoid anything about Vietnam - China relation. So it's an odd situation, but that is how thing is.
- safety1st 3y agoThe political history of Thailand is something of a see-saw, actually. It's worth noting that as of 48 hours ago Thailand's opposition parties utterly smashed the military parties in an election with the highest turnout on record and the leading contender for PM is a Harvard-educated businessman who wants to cut the army's budget by 40%.
