"AI is gonna destroy jobs" vs. "Secure on-device AI can improve your quality of life."
Narratives matter.
- smoldesu 3y agoMarketing matters. Apple's "narrative" is breaking their "privacy is a human right" motto so they can kowtow to China and keep their manufacturing margins. That's not very reassuring to people who want truly private AI hardware, but Apple can fix that with marketing. If you trust them to provide a secure model, I'd wager you haven't fully explored the world of iCloud exploitation.
- efields 3y agoI trust them more than I should but less than I could. In theory researches and hackers can and do watch network traffic while training an on-device model. Apple doesn't want their position of "on device AI is better for the consumer" to be tarnished, so I trust them to not screw around with this.
- precompute 3y agoI, for one, don't want a voice cloner in every hand. These things are very, very destructive. Obviously, this is a post about a new apple feature (even though great voice cloning has existed for months) so all the fanboys are unable to control their enthusiasm.
- rgovostes 3y ago“ Users can create a Personal Voice by reading along with a randomized set of text prompts to record 15 minutes of audio on iPhone or iPad.” The screenshot seems to show that you need to speak 150 sentences.
- MagicMoonlight 3y agoThe printing press is destructive if you rely on pieces of paper proving the king gave you powers… You just need better authentication that doesn’t rely purely on voice.
- precompute 3y agoExcept the printing press never was as versatile as handwriting. Even computers aren't yet. "Better auth" always means more surveillance.
